Early spurt keys Akron over Ohio

ATHENS (AP) - Bubba Walther scored 14 points and Akron jumped to a 25-point first half lead and went on to beat Ohio 69-49 on Wednesday.

Akron (15-7, 9-5 Mid-American Conference) never trailed, and opened the game on a 14-0 run during which Walther made a pair of 3-pointers. He also had four assists for the game.

Sonny Troutman and Mychal Green scored 12 points apiece for Ohio (13-9, 8-6).

The Bobcats missed their first 10 shots and committed four turnovers to open the game. Ohio's first points came more than six minutes into the game when Green made a layup.

Akron's Rick McFadden, who finished with 12 points, hit a 3-pointer with 4:52 to play to give the Zips their largest lead of the night, 65-35.

Ohio was held to 16 percent shooting from the field in the first half, and shot 30 percent for the game. Akron shot 51 percent for the game.

Romeo Travis and Darryl Peterson scored 11 points each for Akron.
