CHESAPEAKE - Coach Joe Waugh knows that one plus one equals a big win.

With Cody Methax giving a solid pitching effort and the Panthers banging out 11 hits, Chesapeake put together the two key elements of baseball as they beat the Coal Grove Hornets 10-1 Monday in an Ohio Valley Conference game.

"Good pitching and good hitting is a pretty good combination," Waugh said.

Methax went six innings to get the win. He struck out eight and walked just one. Jeff Gilkison finished up the seventh inning.

"Cory Methax did a fine job. I think in his first game he was a little tight He had good control," Waugh said. "For the most part he kept the ball down."

Coal Grove was held to just four hits in their first game.

"They hit the ball and we didn't," Hornets coach John Jones said.

Chesapeake went up 3-0 in the first inning.

CHESHIRE - Michael Hill kept going deep, and the River Valley Raiders went down.

Hill slugged a pair of home runs and belted a triple as the Fairland Dragons routed River Valley 14-1 in five innings Monday in an Ohio Valley Conference game.

"Both home runs went over the fence in centerfield which is 365 (feet). They weren't cheapies," Fairland coach Roger Snyder said.

Hill, who went 3-for-4 with six runs batted in, backed the three-hit pitching of Chris Barnett. In working all five innings, Barnett struck out five and walked one.

"Barnett did a pretty good job. He wasn't as sharp as he was against Spring Valley, but he did alright. He's a good, young pitcher," Snyder said.

Fairland jumped ahead 3-0

in the first inning.

Todd Maynard reached on a fielder's choice and Hill tripled in a run, Josh Moore had an RBI single and came home when Trenton Moore hit into a fielder's choice.

The Dragons erupted for 6 runs in the second inning. Josh Moore had a 2-run single while Cory McKnight and Adam Fuller singled home runs in the rally.

Hill hit a 3-run homer in the third inning after Nick Zundel and Maynard singled.

The final two runs scored in the fourth when Zundel walked and Hill cranked another home run for Fairland, 3-0 and 1-0.
