Coal Grove gets everyone involved in 17-9 win over River Valley

CHESHIRE - Coal Grove coach John Jones doesn't mind seeing his team getting offensive.

The Hornets had 12 hits as they outscored the River Valley Raiders 17-9 Thursday in an Ohio Valley Conference game.

"Everyone in the starting nine got a hit. It's always good to see a lot of people contributing," Jones said.

Nick Bazell homered and Randy Wise was 2-4 to lead the Hornets who are now 4-9 overall and 2-7 in the OVC.

Eric Davidson got the win with a route-going performance. He struck out one and walked one.

"Eric didn't pitch a bad game. They hit a lot of balls that fell just out of the reach of our infielders," Jones said.

Coal Grove went up 3-0 in the top first inning.

With one out, Bryan Bryant was safe on a fielder's choice and Bazell hit a two-run homer. Tyler Branch was safe on an error, stole second and came

home on a hit by Davidson.

The Raiders scored twice in the bottom of the inning, the got an unearned run in the second inning to tie the game.

But the Hornets took a 5-3 lead in the top of the third inning.

Bazell walked, Patrick Roush singled, Branch put down a sacrifice bunt to move the runners up a base and Davidson had a two-run double.

Coal Grove erupted for five runs in each of the next two innings to blow the game wide open.

Mason Schug reached on an error, Randy Wise was hit by a pitch and Bryant singled to load the bases. Roush walked to force in a run, Branch reached on an error as a run scored. Davidson walked to force home a run, and Andrew Christian reached on an error as two runs scored.

After the Raiders got three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, Coal Grove scored five more in the top of the fifth inning on two walks, three errors and a single by Bryant.

Coal Grove added single runs in the sixth and seventh innings.

In the sixth, Wise singled, stole second, went to third base on a throwing error, and came home when Bryant grounded out.

The final run came in the seventh inning when Tyler Perry was hit by a pitch, moved up on a passed ball and scored on a hit by Christian.
