COAL GROVE - How are the Coal Grove Hornets' bats like zombies? They've come back from the dead.

After the offense struggled the first week of the season, the Hornets banged out 14 hits including four home runs as they outscored the St. Joseph Flyers 13-9 Tuesday.

"It was a nice game to win. Our bats came to life a little bit," Coal Grove coach John Jones said.

Although the two teams combined for 22 run and 21 hits, they also had 15 errors.

"We just didn't play well defensively. It was a nightmare," St. Joseph coach Greg Bryant said.

"They gave up three earned runs and we gave up one. We both had way too many errors," Jones said.

St. Joseph took a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Kurt Jordan walked, stole second, and came home when Jeremy Addis reached on an error.

The lead went to 2-0 in the second inning when Aaron Whaley was safe on an error and Ryan Schwab had a two-out single.

In the third inning, Ryan Waginger singled, Corey Lewis walked, Addis was safe on an error, Joe O'Leary had a two-run single and the final run scored on a passed ball and the lead was 5-0.

Coal Grove got a run in the bottom of the inning. Josh Jewell and Christain reached on errors and Bazell singled.

The Hornets exploded for nine runs in the fourth inning to take a 10-5 lead.

Roush was safe on an error, Allen singled and Davidson doubled for a run. Christian doubled home a run, and Bryan Bryant and Wise were safe on errors as a run scored.

Bazell hit a 3-run homer and Branch and Roush followed with solo home runs.

The Hornets got three more runs in the fifth inning to lead 13-5.

Christian and Wise singled and Bryant grounded out as a run scored. Bazell then followed with his second home run.

St. Joseph rallied in the sixth inning with four runs.

Jordan, Waginger and Lewis reached on errors as a run scored. Josh Riedel was hit by a pitch, Mark Carroll and Whaley walked to force in a run and Schwab doubled in two runs.
