PROCTORVILLE - First, the Fairland Dragons were greedy, then they were more than generous. Coach Roger Snyder wished his team had avoided its sudden spell of charity.
The Dragons won one game then proceeded to give the other away as they split a doubleheader with the Federal Hocking Lancers Saturday, winning 11-4 before losing 8-7.
"We played well in the first game. We got key hits and good pitching,"
Snyder said.
"In the second game, we made some mistakes, dropped some fly balls and just didn't play good ball.
We got behind and kept coming back, but we kept making errors or doing something to give them a run."
Cory McKnight got the win as he struck out eight, walked one and gave up just five hits to win the first game.
In the first game, Fairland took a 3-0 lead in the first inning.
Nick Zundel, walked, Todd Maynard singled and Michael Hill had an RBI double. McKnight hit a sacrifice fly and Hill scored when Chris Barnett reached on an error.
The lead went to 8-0 in the second inning.
With two outs, Maynard singled and moved up on an error. Hill singled for a run, stole second and came home when Josh Moore singled. After a passed ball, McKnight had an RBI single.
Adam Fuller singled and a bases loaded walk to Trenton Moore forced in courtesy runner Michael Spence. Nolan Love singled in the final run.
After Federal Hocking got four runs in the fourth inning to make it 8-4, Fairland got three back in the fifth inning as Zundel singled and Hill, McKnight and Fuller followed with RBI doubles.
In the second game, the Lancers took an early lead and managed to hold on for the win.
Federal Hocking went up 3-0 in the top of the second inning but Fairland got a run back when McKnight doubled and Fuller tripled.
The Lancers (10-3) scored in the third to lead 4-1 only to have Fairland rally in the bottom of the inning.
Zundel walked and came home when Hill tripled. McKnight doubled to make it 4-3.
Each team got a run in the fourth.
After the Lancers scored, Trenton Moore doubled and courtesy runner Spencer went to third on a balk and scored on a bunt by Zundel.
Again, both teams scored a run in the fifth inning.
Fairland got a run in the fifth inning when Hill singled, stole second, took third on a passed ball and came home on a sacrifice fly by McKnight.
After Federal Hocking got a run in the top of the sixth and seventh innings to lead 8-5, Fairland rallied in the bottom of the seventh.
Maynard doubled and Hill had an RBI single. After a force out at second, Josh Moore moved up on a passed ball and came home when McKnight got his third double.
A ground out and strikeout ended the game.
"We had a runner at third and couldn't get him in," Snyder said.
Fairland, now 10-1, plays at Point Pleasant, W.Va., Monday.
