It was a grand day for Tracy Mays.

Mays put on a grand pitching performance with a one-hitter and also belted a grand slam home run as the Ironton Lady Fighting Tigers beat the Portsmouth Lady Trojans 9-1 Wednesday.

Mays matched her season-high total of 13 strikeouts and also walked two. The only Portsmouth hit was a single in the seventh inning.

"Tracy was amazing tonight both on the mound and at the plate," Ironton coach Marissa Fields.

"Tracy is an excellent pitcher. Most of the time you would not guess that by our team stats. Tonight, the young team stepped up and played defense behind her with a season low one error."

Eden Runyon walked, Lindsey Mooney put down a sacrifice bunt, Kelsey Bronson singled and Nikki Harbolt walked to load the bases. Mays then slammed her home run over the left field fence.

Ironton, 3-7, hosts Wayne, W.Va., Thursday.

"I hope this win gives the girls the confidence they need to continue to win games. I know they can, I just hope they believe in themselves," Fields said.
