SOUTH POINT - Just when it looked like the South Point Pointers should quit, they went to work.

Trailing 3-1 in the bottom of the seventh inning, the Pointers scored three times to beat the Chesapeake Panthers 4-3 Wednesday in an Ohio Valley Conference game.

"In the seventh inning it would have been easy for us to quit, but we came back," Pointers coach Dave Adams said.

The comeback enabled Dale Kinney to pick up the win. Kinney pitched a three-hitter, struck out three and walked two in going the distance.

P.J. Rase worked 6.1 innings for the Panthers and suffered the loss. He struck out eight, walked four and hit a batter.

"Dale pitched a great game. We made some errors, but we made some big plays. Still, I don't want to take anything away from Rase. He pitched a pretty good game," Adams said.

After two scoreless innings, Chesapeake took a 2-0 lead in the third.

Brad Eldred walked, moved up on an error, took third on a hit by Rase, and came home when Jeff Gilkison grounded out. Cody Methax singled to score Rase.

The Pointers cut the deficit in half in the sixth inning when Corey Smoot singled, stole second and third, and came home on a passed ball.

The Panthers made it 3-1 in the top of the seventh inning.

Keith Marcum and Kerstin Harris reached on errors. After a double steal, Rase was walked intentionally and Cory Methax hit a sacrifice fly.

But the Pointers rallied in the bottom of the seventh.

Tyler Wells singled, moved up on a passed ball and went to third when Chase McWorther was safe on an error. Smoot hit by a pitch to load the bases.

Chris Brown hit a comebacker to the mound, but the throw home went over the catcher's head allowing two runs to score and tie the game.

After a strikeout, Anthony Ross delivered a base hit for the game-winning RBI.

Ross, the only player with multiple hits, went 2-for-4.

South Point, 13-6 and 7-2 in the OVC, plays Cabell Midland in the Boyd County Classic Friday.

Chesapeake is 10-6 and 5-3 in the conference.
