Big hits lead Trojans past South Point

SOUTH POINT - Big hits gave the Portsmouth Trojans a big win.
Drew Howard had a grand slam home run and pitcher Derek Wales belted a three-run triple as the Portsmouth Trojans breezed past the South Point Pointers 18-2 Tuesday in the Division III sectional tournament.
Portsmouth, 16-8, will play at Wheelersburg Friday in the sectional finals.
The Pointers took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Anthony Ross singled, moved up on Dale Kinney's ground out and scored on a hit by Justin Smith.
But Howard hit a grand slam in the second inning to highlight an eight-run rally to make it 8-1.
Wales emptied the bases with a triple to key a 10-run third inning that opened up an 18-1 lead.
The Pointers got a run in the bottom of the third when Corey Smoot doubled and Smith singled.
Smoot went 3-3 while Smith was 2-2 with both RBI.
Wales, 4-1, went the first three innings to get the win. He struck out one and did not walk a batter.
The Trojans had 12 hits with Brian Estep going 2-for-3 with three runs batted in and Randy Phipps 2-3 with two RBI. J.R. Glockner was 2-2 with a pair of runs driven in.
Smith took the loss for the Pointers who finished the season 15-10.
