Businessman indicted for identity theft case

A local businessman accused in a multi-state theft case was indicted late last week by a Lawrence County grand jury.

Charles W. Jenkins, 35, of 801 High St., Coal Grove, the co-owner of

Buckeye Public Safety Equipment in Ironton, was indicted on 19 charges.

Alleged offenses include three counts of fourth-degree felony grand theft, one count of second- degree felony engaging in a pattern of corrupt activity, six counts of first-degree misdemeanor identity theft, four counts of first-degree misdemeanor theft, two counts of fifth-degree felony theft and three counts of fourth-degree felony theft.

Jenkins was arrested in March after Ironton Police received several phone calls from people saying they had done business with Jenkins in the past but had found charges on their credit cards for items they had not purchased from Jenkins' business. The alleged illegal activity took place between February and early March.

According to information from the Lawrence County Prosecutor's Office, others indicted by the grand jury were:

4David Crace, 47, 96 Private Drive 1206, Chesapeake, one count of fourth-degree felony domestic violence.

4Connie Christian, 26, 1260 Lewis Drive, Proctorville, one count of fifth-degree felony theft by deception.

4Scotty R. McDonald, 18, 3538 County Road 1, Chesapeake, one count of second-degree felony attempt to commit aggravated burglary and one count of second-degree misdemeanor criminal damaging or endangering.

4Freddie J. Weinfurtner, 18, 622 Lane St., Coal Grove, one count of first-degree misdemeanor contributing to the unruliness of a child.

4Terry E. Seward, 38, 1006 S. Ninth St., Ironton,

one count of fifth-degree felony receiving stolen property.

4Billy Joe Darby, 26, 2311 Hamilton St., Hanging Rock, one count of second-degree felony burglary.

4Michael E. Castle, 26, 1533 County Road 25, Pedro, one count of fifth-degree felony theft.

4Jason L. France, 22, 609 Buckhorn St., Ironton, one count of third-degree felony domestic violence.

4Samantha Bynes, 19, Columbus, one count of third-degree felony

complicity to trafficking in crack cocaine and one count of fifth-degree felony permitting drug abuse.

4 Shannon Lewis, 23, 912 County Road 119, Ironton, one count of second-degree felonious assault and one count of second-degree misdemeanor criminal damaging or endangering.

In addition, six secret indictments, four of them drug-related, were handed out. The grand jury met Thursday and Friday of last week.
