LLOYD, Ky. - The Ironton Fighting Tigers need a new package of erasers.

The Fighting Tigers made more than their share of mistakes Tuesday in a 5-3 loss to the Greenup County Musketeers.

"We kept shooting ourselves in the foot the whole game," Ironton coach Mark Lewis said. "It wasn't the physical mistakes as much as the mental mistakes. We ran ourselves out of some scoring opportunities and let them score because of our mistakes."

Ironton used a Greenup County mistake to score its first run.

Brigham Waginger beat out an infield hit and went to third base on a bad throw to first base. An out later, Josh Adkins hit a sacrifice fly.

Greenup (14-9) tied the game in the third inning on a leadoff home run by David Bentley.

The score remained tied until the fifth inning when the Musketeers scored twice.

With one out, Cody Irvin and Derrick Lattimer walked and scored on a double off the fence in left field by Josh Jones.

The Fighting Tigers battled back to tie the game in the top of the sixth inning.

With one out, Dustin Preston and Patrick Kouns walked. A double steal put runners at second and third bases. Ryan Walker grounded out to first base on a close play as courtesy runner J.J. Johnson scored. Chad Miller then singled home Kouns with the tying run.

But the Musketeers got what proved to be the winning runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Aaron Rowe and Joe Stevens singled to put runners on the corners. Brandon Craycraft singled to score Rowe with the go ahead run. Bentley reached on a fielder's choice, but on the play a throwing error allowed Stevens to score.

Ironton went out in order in the seventh inning.

Chad Kouns got the win for Greenup as he went the first six innings. Adkins took the loss in relief of Miller.

"Chad and Josh didn't seem to have their normal pop on the ball. They battled the whole game, they just weren't on top of their game," Lewis said.

Ironton, 9-7, plays at Gallipolis Wednesday and hosts Coal Grove Thursday.
