SOUTH POINT - Dale Kinney took matters into his own hands.

Kinney struck out seven, walked two and gave up only three hits while also knocking in a pair of runs as he led the South Point Pointers to a 3-2 win Wednesday over the Huntington. St. Joe (W.Va.) Fighting Irish.

"Kinney pitched a good game and we played good defense. He had the one bad inning, but he came back to shut them down. He's done a heck of a job all season for us," Pointers coach Dave Adams said.

South Point pushed across two runs in the first inning to take a quick lead.

Corey Smoot singled, Anthony Ross doubled and Kinney singled home both runners.

The Fighting Irish got two runs in the fourth inning to tie game.

The winning run scored in the sixth inning.

Rocky Roe was hit by a pitch and went to third on a bad pickoff throw. Tyler Wells then hit a sacrifice fly to score Roe.

South Point is now 15-9 on the regular season. The Pointers finished the Ohio Valley Conference in second place with an 8-2 record.

"It was a good year for this team. They were awful young, so that's a nice accomplishment," Adams said.

South Point hosts Portsmouth Tuesday in the Division III sectional tournament.
