SOUTH WEBSTER - Even on a good night, the St. Joseph Flyers can't catch a break.
Despite outhitting South Webster 14-9, four errors proved too costly as the Flyers lost 8-5 to the Jeeps in the Division IV sectional tournament semifinals.
"We had our best hitting game of the year, we just made errors at the worst time," Flyers coach Greg Bryant said. "They took advantage of their hits and our errors."
Kurt Jordan and Alex Swarts led the Flyers onslaught as they went 3-for-4. Joe O'Leary and Ryan Schwab were 2-4.
Schwab and Jordan singled, moved up on a wild pitch and scored when Cory Lewis singled. A wild pitch sent Lewis to third and Swarts doubled. A ground out sent Swarts to third and O'Leary had an RBI single.
The Jeeps got two runs back in the bottom of the inning on a dropped fly ball with two outs.
South Webster got three runs in the third inning to go up 5-4, but the Flyers tied the game in the fourth inning.
Jordan singled, stole second and came home when Jeremy Addis had a run-scoring single.
The Jeeps answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning to take the lead for good at 7-5. They added an insurance run in the sixth inning.
St. Joseph, finishing 2-14, left nine runners on base.
"We were in a lot of close games this year, so that will be good experience for us. We only lose two guys, so hopefully we'll be better next year," Bryant said.
South Webster, 7-15, plays at Symmes Valley at 5 p.m. Thursday.
