WHEELESBURG - The Coal Grove Hornets didn't even need a backhoe to get into this deep of a fix.

The Wheelersburg Pirates took advantage of six Coal Grove errors and six walks as they beat the Hornets 10-0 in five innings Tuesday in the Division III sectional tournament.

"Randy (Wise) didn't have his good control and we didn't make a lot of plays we should have," Hornets coach John Jones said. "We didn't take advantage of the times we had a chance to score. We dug ourselves a hole and couldn't get out of it."

Wise only gave up eight hits and struck out three, but the six walks were costly.

After Coal Grove left the bases loaded with one out in the first inning, Wheelersburg came back to score three runs in the bottom of the inning.

Drew Sampson was safe on an error, Alex Wamsley and Tyler Suter walked, and John Storey doubled home two. Devin Miller and Brandon Russell walked with two outs to force in a run.

The score remained 3-0 until the fourth inning when the Pirates rallied for seven runs.

Sampson was hit by a pitch, Wamsley walked and Brandon White reached on an error as a run scored.

Suter belted a three-run homer as the lead ballooned to 7-0.

Storey singled, Miller walked and Justin Stegman was safe on an error as two runs scored. Russell doubled to drive in Stegman with the 10th run.

Stegman got the win as he struck out eight and did not walk a batter.

The Hornets finish the season 9-12.
