IJL All-Stars stay alive

This isn't what they meant by "take a walk on the wild side."

With both teams ombining for 28 walks and hit batsmen along with 21 hits, Ironton outscored South Point 18-15 Friday in the District 11 Junior League All-Star tournament.

South Point got a run in the top of the first inning when Austin Ross singled, Nate Burcham doubled, Josh Esque was walked and McClure was hit by a pitch.

Ironton roared back with 11 runs in the bottom of the inning.

Josh Pancake singled, Ryan O'Leary had a sacrifice bunt and Keith Wetzel doubled to tie the game. Caleb Blackburn singled and Howie Lucas slammed a three-run homer.

Brian Warner reached on an error, Jason Pennington doubled for a run and Tommy Waginger was safe on an error as a run scored. Pancake double for a run, O'Leary walked, Wetzel had an RBI single, Blackburn was hit by a pitch to force in a run, Lucas hit a sacrifice fly and Ethan Preston capped the rally with a run-scoring single.

South Point answered with five runs in the second inning.

Two walks, RBI singles by Jordan Fletcher and Burcham, two more walks and a hit batsman forced in a run and Jake Adkins singled in a run.

Burcham belted a two-run homer in the third inning to make it 11-8.

South Point took the lead with five runs in the top of the fourth inning.

Wes Hall singled and three straight walks forced in a run. Ross got a two-run single, Esque walked to force in a run and McClure was hit by a pitch as the fifth run was forced home.

South Point made it 14-11 with an unearned run in the top of the fifth inning, but Ironton came to life with six runs in the bottom of the inning to take the lead for good at 17-14.

Jon Monnig walked, Pancake singled and Pierce Reeves sacrifice bunt was booted for an error as both runners scored. Wetzel and Blackburn walked and Lucas was hit by a pitch to force in a run. Preston walked for another RBI and Ryan Sias delivered a clinching two-run single.

Ironton made it 18-14 with a run in the sixth when O'Leary walked, Lucas was hit by a pitch and Preston cranked a RBI double.

South Point got its final run in the seventh inning when Jake Adkins walked, stole second base and scored on a hit by Doug Dillon.

thursday's Game

Michael Lamb allowed two hits as Fairland topped Ironton 6-0 in a District 11 Junior League All-Star game Thursday.

Lamb struck out six, walked two and hit two batters in going the distance. Howie Lucas worked five innings and suffered the loss. Lucas gave up just six hits, struck out four and walked three.
