Berlin forces title game with SPSL

SOUTH WEBSTER - Some things just aren't meant to be.

That's the way it was for the South Point Senior League All-Stars Tuesday as they fell 8-5 to Berlin in the state tournament.

"We just didn't hit the ball," South Point coach D.L. McWhorter said. "We've been hitting, but we were popping it up. And even as bad as we hit the ball we were still in it.

"They had a lot of hits that just happened to fall in. We had the bases loaded twice and couldn't get a key hit."

The two teams meet again at noon Wednesday for the state championship.

Berlin had 13 hits - all singles - as they stayed alive in the tournament. South Point finished with nine hits.

After a scoreless first inning, Berlin got a run in the second when Kaufman, Wengard and Yoder singled and K. Miller hit into a fielder's choice.

The Berlin lead went to 4-0 in the third inning.

Miller, Gause and S. Miller all singled to load the bases. Kaufman hit a sacrifice fly and Wengard and Yoder had RBI singles.

Both teams scored three runs in the fourth inning.

Anthony Ross singled, Trenton Moore doubled and Chase McWhorter walked to load the bases for South Point. Beau Weed was hit by a pitch for a run, Kyle Hughes singled in a run and Lance Miller walked to force home the final run.

In the bottom of the inning, Nippert walked and Miller, Gause and S. Miller all singled for two runs. Kaufman hit his second sacrifice fly to drive in the third run.
