The bad news got worse for the Eaton All-Stars.

After winning their first two games easily, Fairland turned in its strongest performance and whipped Eaton 10-2 Sunday in the State Junior League All-Star Tournament at the Ironton Senior League Field.

"We played our best game today. We hit the ball good and got good pitching and we had some good plays in the field," Fairland coach John Bond said. "It was definitely our best defensive game."

Adam Berry supplied the pitching with a three-hitter. He struck out two and walked six in going the distance.

"Adam Berry pitched a really good game. He kept the ball down and they hit a lot of ground balls. We played a really good game against a really good game," Bond said.

Offensively, Fairland had 11 hits including a double and home run by Robbie Easterling. Michael Lamb was 2-for-3 while Ethan Long and Tyler Thackston each went 2-4.

The defense was sparked by Matt Bloomfield who made a run-saving catch in center field in the first inning, then caught a screaming line drive while playing second base in the fourth inning.

"(Eaton) hit the ball and we made some plays," Bond said. "Matt Bloomfield made a spectacular catch in the first inning to save two runs, and Robbie Easterling made some nice plays at third base."

Fairland went out in front with a run in the first inning.

Bloomfield walked, stole second base, went to third on an error and scored on an errant pickoff throw.

In the third inning, Fairland erupted for five runs to lead 6-0.

Bloomfield walked, stole second and third and came home on a sacrifice fly by Berry.

Easterling followed with a solo home run, Thackston singled and moved up on a throwing error, Lamb was hit by a pitch and Tyler Godby had a two-run single.

Daniel Puckett singled to drive in Godby and cap the rally.

"Easterling's home run was a shot. He was down 0-2 and he crushed the next pitch," Bond said.

Both teams scored in the fifth inning.

Craig Jackson walked, Matt Harper hit into a fielder's choice, Jesse French walked and Jake Remaklus and Max Bowser had RBI singles.

Fairland got a run back in the bottom of the inning when Thackston and Lamb hit back-to-back doubles.

Fairland put the game out of reach with three runs in the sixth inning.

Bloomfield singled to open the inning and Long followed with an RBI single. Berry singled, Easterling was hit by a pitch to load the bases and Lamb had a two-run single.

Fairland and Maumee will play at 5 p.m. Monday.
