FLATWOODS, Ky. - And a child shall lead you.

It was the Ironton Fighting Tigers youngest member who led the way as freshman Nathan Kerns took medalist honors in a golf win over the Russell Red Devils Wednesday at The Oaks Golf Course.

Kerns shot a 1-over 37 in his best round of the season and Ironton posted a 159 team score to beat Russell by 12 strokes.

Junior Seth Christian was right behind with a 38 for runner-up honors.

"This

was pretty important for Nathan's confidence. He played really well," coach Jeff Kerns said. "

Dennis Gagai shot a 41 followed by Gavin Harbolt with a 43. Blake Roth added a 46 and Jay Rudmann completed the scoring with a 49.

"Seth is still playing well and Gavin is still playing well," coach Kerns said. "It's very important to have depth. You can't ride the same horses all year long. It's impossible."

Kasey Warnock shot a 39 to lead Russell. Eric Conley had a 42, Nick Scott a 44, Wes Smith 46, Michael Bradley 48 and Ross Turner 49.

"That's a pretty good win. The Oaks is a tough course and to beat a good Russell team on its home course makes it a nice win," coach Kerns said.

Ironton plays in the 24-team Huntington (W.Va.) Invitational Saturday at Esquire Country Club. Each team plays five golfers and counts all five scores.

"That will be a tough tournament. We'll see where we stack up after this one. It'll be a good measuring stick," said coach Kerns.

Ironton finished seventh last year.
