Missed chances hurt Hornets

COAL GROVE - Too many missed chances.

The Coal Grove Hornets failed to convert on their scoring chances while the Piketon Red Streaks made good on theirs and the end results was a 36-14 season-opening win by Piketon Friday night.

After a shanked punt, Piketon had the ball at the Hornets 22-yard line to begin the game.

Six plays later Andrew Asburn scored from a yard out. Gary Moore blocked the point after and it was 6-0.

Moore returned the ensuing kickoff 38 yards to the Piketon 43. Hyland ran 9 yards to cap the quick six-play a drive. Hyland also ran for the conversion and Coal Grove led 8-6.

Coal Grove got the ball back at their own 35. On the second play, Hyland broke free

for an 11-yard game and a personal foul moved the ball to the Red Streaks 32.

Twelve plays into the second quarter, Coal Grove scored when Hyland pounded his way into the end zone from 2 yards out and the Hornets led 14-6.

Following the ensuing kickoff, Piketon took only one play to score as halfback Justin Bryant bolted up the middle on a 49-yard scoring run. Burnard Varsey ran for the conversion on a faked extra point kick and the game was tied 14-14.

Bryan Patrick and Gary Moore combined for a 2-yard loss on Bryant after Piketon got the ball back. But on the next play, Osburn broke free on a 48-yard touchdown gallop. Osburn added the conversion run and Piketon led 22-14.

Hyland got an interception off a tipped pass that stopped Piketon's drive at the Hornets 34.

However, Piketon's Andy Pearl stripped the ball from a Hornet runner near midfield to stop that drive.

Coal Grove held and went to Hyland two straight plays for 21 totals yards. The Hornet then fumbled fumbled the snap to halt another drive.

After neither team scored in the third quarter, Piketon began to go to work.

Osburn connected on a halfback pass to Burnard Varney that covered 43 yards to the Coal Grove 11-yard line. Four plays later Justin Crothers scored on a 4-yard keeper and it was 29-14.

Coal Grove began another drive only to have Piketon sack Hornets quarterback Eric Davidson for a 9-yard loss.

The Hornets were forced to punt and three plays later Osburn scampered 59 yards for the touchdown and it was 36-14.

Piketon had 270 total yards including 228 on the ground. Osburn led Piketon with 126 yards on 10 carries while Bryant added 90 yards on 11 attempts.

Coal Grove was led by Hyland with 143 yards on 29 attempts.
