Good things happen when you do things right.

Mistakes and missed assignments had the Ironton Fighting Tigers leading the South Point Pointers just 14-7 at halftime Friday night.

Ironton coach Bob Lutz made a few adjustments at the break and Ironton came out roaring in the third quarter with five touchdowns en route to a 62-7 rout of the Pointers.

"We put the ball on the ground a couple of times and we can't afford to do that," Lutz said. "We were blocking the wrong people the first half, so we straightened that out and made a couple of adjustments and the offense began to roll."

The offense rolled to the tune of 508 total yards including 465 on the ground. Darius Lewis led the ground game with 147 yards on 15 carries and scored four touchdowns. Eric Layne, who didn't have any carries last week, added 63 yards on eight carries.

"I know I block a lot and I block well, but I just wanted my chance to run the ball because I thought I could run just as hard as the other guys," Layne said.

While the defense finally got rolling in the second half, the defense put the clamps on the Pointers aerial game and stymied the running game as well. South Point managed just 93 total yards and five first downs.

"They popped a couple of runs, but for the most part they couldn't run the ball. They only completed one pass up the field. Everything else was dump offs and swing passes. We did a good job of getting heat on the quarterback," Lutz said.

Defensive end Brandon Walker had two quarterback sacks and Jared Murphy, the other end, had another.

"Coach Lutz told me I had to get some heat on the quarterback. Finally I was able to get to (Smith) and break his rhythm," Walker said.

Ironton (2-0) scored on its opening possession with a 71-yard, 11-play drive capped by a Lewis 8-yard scoring run. Craig Stamper's conversion kick made it 7-0.

After a South Point punt and an Ironton penalty, the Fighting Tigers were back on their own 8-yard line. Three plays later the Pointers Jerrell Dean recovered a fumble at the 17.

An 11-yard Smith to Dean pass got the ball to the 6-yard line and two plays later Smith scored on a 1-yard run. Rocky Roe kicked the conversion and it was 7-7.

After an exchange of punts, Ironton marched 85 yards on 11 running plays and scored when Murphy bulled into the end zone from 2 yards out. Stamper added the conversion and it was 14-7.

Ironton had an opportunity to score again but fumbled a punt return at midfield to kill any chances.

"I know it sounds stupid when you look at the score, but my kids ran and hit. I can see a light at the end of the tunnel," Pointers coach Dan McDavid said. "I was pleased with the first half."

Then came the third quarter.

Lewis ran 13 yards on the first play and then Chad Miller hit Walker with a 40-yard pass to the 4-yard line. Two plays later Lewis scored on a 1-yard run and it was 21-7.

A shanked punt covered 12 yards and Ironton had the ball at the Pointers 37. Lewis scored on the next play and it was 28-7.

John McClellan intercepted a Smith pass two plays into the Pointers next possession and a 19-yard return put the ball at the 23.

Layne ran 15 yards to the 8 and Murphy had a pair of 4-yard runs to score and extend the lead to 34-7.

A 10-yard scoring run by Lewis

with 4:33 left in the quarter made it 41-7 and the starters began to exit.

Branden Sites broke a couple of tackles at the line of scrimmage and bolted 55 yards into the end zone to put the Fighting Tigers up 48-7 before the end of the quarter.

Ironton's backups punched in two scores in the fourth quarter.

Taville Osborne had a 10-yard run for a touchdown and Brandon Bazell scored on a 15-yard keeper. Cody Osborne kicked both extra points.
