WINFIELD, W.Va. - Turnovers can turn around a game.

Three turnovers turned the fortunes of the Fairland Dragons in the wrong direction as they lost 34-14 to the Winfield Generals Friday.

"It's hard to play on a short field. It seemed like we were backed up in our own territory all night." Fairland coach Brent Wilcoxon said.

Fairland took a 6-0 lead on a 58-yard pass from Rich Staggs to Sam Huff to cap a quick 75-yard, four-play drive.

But that's when the turnovers hit.

A short punt set up a 35-yard drive by Winfield that ended on a 7-yard run by Lucas Robinson. Zach Markham's conversion kick gave the Generals a 7-6 lead with 7:00 left in the half.

Jared White recovered a Fairland fumble at the 27-yard line and three plays later Robinson ran 20 yards for a touchdown and it was 14-0.

Wayne Pritt intercepted a Fairland pass and ran it back 27 yards for a touchdown as Winfield now led 20-6.

Fairland had a drive stall at the 5-yard line as time ran out before the end of the half.

A personal foul aided a 71-yard, four-play Winfield drive to start the second half. Lee Hazelett ran 39 yards for the touchdown and it was 27-6.

A 20-yard pass from Jon Smoot to Pritt extended the lead to 34-6.

Fairland (0-2) answered with a 17-yard touchdown strike from Staggs to Josh Johnson with just 30 seconds to play. Adam Fuller caught the conversion pass.

"Our kids never gave up no matter what the score. We shot ourselves in the foot all night long with turnovers and penalties," Wilcoxon said.

Fairland had 315 total yards with Staggs hitting 24 of 41 passes for 273 yards. Fuller ran 15 times for 78 yards.

Travis Cardwell intercepted a fake punt and had 14 tackles including a quarterback sack to lead the defense. Nolan Love had 11 tackles and Chad Kilgore a fumble recovery.

Robinson finished with 100 yards on 14 carries to lead the Winfield ground game which racked up 219 yards.
