Fast start carries West over Rock Hill

PEDRO - Maybe the Rock Hill Redmen need to set their alarm clock to sound before the first half starts.

After falling behind by three touchdowns at halftime, the Redmen played Portsmouth West even in the second half in a 40-21 loss to the Senators Friday.

"They jumped on us early and we didn't respond. We came out the second half and took it right down the field and scored. We just didn't play very well overall," Rock Hill coach Todd Knipp said.

"It was one of those games when you couldn't have anyone make a mistake. It seemed any time we had a breakdown, they had the right play called."

Jerrod Pendleton had a 4-yard scoring run in the first quarter as West took a 6-0 lead.

Pendleton added a 5-yard touchdown scamper and Austin Seevers hit Drew Collier with an 18-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter as the Senators scored 15 points and went up 21-0 at the break.

"They came out and executed pretty well and took advantage of every situation," Knipp said.

"They were able to make plays and keep their drives going. Their quarterback hurt us running and he was able to throw."

Seevers ran eight times for 97 yards and completed 8 of 11 passes for 135 yards. Pendleton rushed 24 times for 174 yards as West (3-1) racked up 449 total yards.

Rock Hill (3-1) had 229 total yards with K.C. Christian rushing 23 times for 145 yards and T.J. Blagg getting 88 yards on 18 attempts and two touchdowns.

The Redmen scored on their first possession of the second half as Christian ran 6 yards for a touchdown. Blagg kicked the conversion and it was 21-7.

Pendleton added a 2-yard scoring run midway through the third quarter, but then he broke free on a 49-yard scoring jaunt and it was 33-7.

Blagg had a 20-yard scoring run to cut the deficit to 33-14.

After Seevers had a 7-yard touchdown run, Blagg went 2 yards for a score and Jarrod Casey threw to Blagg for the conversion.

The only turnover in the game was a fumble recovered by Blagg.
