Wheelersburg#039;s defense too much for Boyd County

WHEELERSBURG - The passing game has been good to the Wheelersburg Pirates.

The other team's passing game, that is.

For the second straight week, the Pirates had two key interceptions - one for a touchdown - as they evened their record at 2-2 following a 35-18 win over the previously unbeaten Boyd County (Ky.) Lions Friday.

Matt Jenkins returned an interception 44 yards for a touchdown just 1:06 into the game and the Pirates led 7-0.

Brandon White came back with a 2-yard scoring run and the lead was 14-0 before the end of the quarter.

The Pirates opened up a 28-0 halftime lead on two short John Storey touchdown runs in the second quarter.

The Lions got on the scoreboard midway through the third quarter on a 34-yard pass from Luke Moore to Gaitlin Barker, but Wheelersburg answered with a 25-yard touchdown run by Brandon Jackson and it was 35-6.

The Lions managed two late scores on a 2-yard run by Brennan Sargent and a 24-yard pass from Moore to Barker.

Wheelersburg racked up 274 rushing yards and 339 total yards of offense. White ran 16 times for 92 yards and Jackson had 878 yards on nine carries. Storey hit 2 of 3 passes for 65 yards and ran for 33 more yards.

Boyd County (4-1) was led by Moore who completed 16 of 24 passes for 198 yards but was suffered two interceptions.
