A Catlettsburg, Ky., man Wednesday waived his right to a speedy trial to allow his attorney more time to prepare his defense.

Erik Hargis, 25, is charged with second-degree felonious assault in connection with an incident that happened May 19.

"You've been in jail since June 23 and we're running out of time," Lawrence County Common Pleas Judge Frank McCown told him. "You either need to waive your right to a speedy trial or we've got to have this trial very quickly."

Hargis agreed to waive his right to a speedy trial and will return to court in two weeks for a pretrial conference.

A Coal Grove woman was arraigned Wednesday on three counts of fourth-degree felony theft of drugs. Lisa Burd, 35, of 316 Pike St., was released on her own recognizance. McCown scheduled a Sept. 28 pretrial conference.
