Kerns helps Fighting Tiger golfers to win

WEST PORTSMOUTH - And a child shall lead them.

Nathan Kerns, the only freshman on the golf team, led the Ironton Fighting Tigers to a quad match win Monday at Shawnee Golf Course.

Kerns earned medalist honors for the third time this season as he fired a 1-over par 36 to help Ironton win by 36 strokes.

"We're playing well right now which is what we were hoping for heading into tournament play," Ironton coach Jeff Kerns said. "Nathan has been pretty steady all year for a freshman. They all played well."

Dennis Gagai and Seth Christian were just one stroke behind for the Fighting Tigers. Gavin Harbolt shot a 38 to place as fourth man while Blake Roth carded a 39.

Rock Hill was runner-up with a 184 score. Portsmouth East shot a 211 and New Boston 258.

The Fighting Tigers, 63-4, play in the Division II sectional today at Shawnee Golf Course.

On Saturday, Ironton finished second in the 15-team field Riverside Invitational in Gallipolis.

Athens shot a 311 team score

to win the 12th annual event for the third time and first since 2001.

Ironton was second, just four strokes back at 315 and 13 strokes ahead of Racine Southern.

Christian led Ironton with a 75 score and Kerns was tied for eighth as he shot a 79. Gagai was tied for 11th place as he shot an 80, Jay Rudmann tied for 15h place at 81 and Gavin

Harbolt finished with an 88.
