ELIZABETH TOWNSHIP- It is standard procedure in Lawrence County.

High School seniors in all seven public school districts graduate on the same day - the Sunday before Memorial Day - and often nearly at the same time in the early afternoon.

But that tradition is undergoing some change for Rock Hill High School seniors, at least for the Class of 2006. The board of education voted Tuesday evening to move its commencement ceremony from Sunday to the Saturday before Memorial Day, which will be May 27, 2006.

"The Sunday graduation interfered with church activities," acting superintendent Steve Lambert said. "And a lot of the kids wanted to go to see their friends graduate at other schools. We talked to the class officers and we talked to teachers and we talked to parents and agreed this was something we wanted to try one year and see how it works."

The commencement will be at 6 p.m. As Lambert pointed out, that is early enough in the evening for families to plan outings afterward to celebrate their graduate's achievement.
