WILLOW WOOD — Roadies.

The St. Joseph Flyers are their own “roadies” after winning for the third time on the road this season by beating the Symmes Valley Vikings 72-58 Tuesday.

The foreign background didn’t bother the Flyers as they hit 26 of 55 field goal attempts for 47 percent.

“We shot the ball well and we usually don’t shoot well at their place,” Flyers coach Kevin Hacker said of Symmes Valley’s gym. “We’ve won three out of four on the road and we have another one coming.”

Cory Lewis scored 24 points to lead four Flyers in double figures. Michael Basedow scored 13 points, Alex Swarts had 11 points, six rebounds and five assists and Ryan Staton came off the bench to score 11 points.

Lewis also led the Flyers with seven rebounds.

Kyle Meadows scored 23 points for the Vikings. Michael Humphreys had 16 points and Matt Owens added 11 for the Vikings (1-2).

“St. Joe just outplayed us,” coach Alvin Carpenter said. “We just didn’t play with any consistency and we couldn’t maintain our intensity.”

Humphreys and Owens combined for 11 points in the first quarter as Symmes Valley took an 18-16 lead. Swarts scored six points while Lewis and Ryan Schwab had four each.

Jeremy Addis and Lewis scored six points each as the Flyers outscored the Vikings 24-14 to take a 40-32 lead. Meadows and Owens scored six points each.

“We came out flat, but we came out the second quarter and played better defense,” Hacker said. “We were a little flat in the third quarter and picked it up again in the fourth. Our defense just wasn’t like it has been.”

Meadows scored eight points and Humphreys six to offset six points by Lewis as the Vikings closed the gap to 50-36. The Vikings trailed by two points twice in the quarter.

But Basedow scored six points, Staton had five more and Lewis converted 6-of-6 from the foul line as the Flyers clinched the win.

“Ryan Staton did a nice job off the bench for us. They had the two big kids and Swarts and Addis got in some foul trouble. But Staton and Clay Crum did a nice job,” Hacker said.
