SOUTH POINT — Comfort Suites is coming to South Point — bringing jobs and more lodging opportunities to Lawrence County.

The facility, located near the intersection of U.S. 52 and Charley Creek Road, is being built by Madhu Limited Liability Corporation and is expected to cost close to $3 million.

The hotel will consist of 62 units, all suites and will offer an indoor pool, continental breakfast and other amenities to the area.

“We are looking forward to it,” said Hammond Patel, an investor in the project. “I think it is a good location. I think it is going to do a good business up there.”

Patel said the investors looked at several locations before choosing the location on Old U.S. 52.

Many aspects of the area attracted the investors including the close proximity to Interstate 64, the availability of the land and the many restaurants that populate the area, Patel said.

“I think there is a need for a hotel in that area to cater to Burlington, South Point, Proctorville, West Huntington and so on,” he said.

Another additional benefit the hotel will bring to the area is jobs. Patel said they anticipate the hotel, when completed will create 20-25 jobs when fully staffed.

Vivian Khounlavong, director of travel and tourism for the Greater Lawrence County Area Chamber of Commerce, said from a tourism point of view, another hotel is something that is much needed in the area.

“Statistically, we get more visitors to the area than rooms available,” she said.

From an economic point of view, Khounlavong said, job creation is the largest priority.

“That is a sign that Lawrence County’s economic future is moving forward,” she said.

The anticipated completion date of the facility is the end of May/June 2006.
