McDERMOTT — Big, fast and good is not a good combination when you’re the opposition.

The Northwest Lady Mohawks showed those characteristics in a 58-28 win over the Rock Hill Redwomen Thursday.

“They’re big and they’re fast. They’re one of the two best teams we’ll play,” Redwomen coach Matt Fulks said.

Northwest opened the game with an 11-0 run and led 15-6 at the end of the first quarter.

During the opening two minutes Rock Hill starting forward Michelle Pancake got into foul trouble and sat out the rest of the half.

Rock Hill was still within striking distance late in the second quarter when Brittany Hackworth came off the bench to hit three 3-pointers and help Northwest pull away to a 38-14 halftime lead.

“We got down and had good looks,” Fulks said. “We had some shots but we just couldn’t hit them. If we ever hit our shots, we’ll score some points.”

Rock Hill’s defense held Northwest to four points in the third quarter and the Redwomen got closer before Northwest began to pull away in the fourth quarter.

Hackworth led the unbeaten Lady Mohawks with 17 points. Keri Sanders added 12 points and Heather Ellis scored 11.

Mandi McKenzie and Brooke Long scored 7 points each to lead the Redwomen (2-6). Brittany Ross chipped in with six.
