“We had good balance on offense and we played pretty good defense,” Lady Hornets coach Nick Miller said. “We got to play everyone so that should help our bench experience.”

The win improved Coal Grove’s record to 4-1 overall and 2-0 in the Ohio Valley Conference.

“We’re happy with our conference record, but we have to get back to work because we have a tough schedule ahead of us,” Miller said.

Coal Grove took a 20-10 lead at the end of the first quarter and opened up 43-22 lead at the half.

The Lady Hornets outscored River Valley 18-5 in the third quarter to build an insurmountable 61-27 lead.

River Valley (2-4, 1-2) was led by Beth Payne with 11 points.

Fairland 56, Chesapeake 50

PROCTORVILLE — One heartbreaking loss deserves a thrilling win.

After dropping a

tough 59-51 decision to Portsmouth last week, the Fairland Lady Dragons rallied in the fourth quarter to beat the Chesapeake Lady Panthers 56-50 Monday in an Ohio Valley Conference game.

Behind the foul shooting of Shea Berry, Fairland outscored Chesapeake 26-12 in the fourth quarter to rally from an 8-point deficit to get the win.

Fairland’s win spoiled a 32-point, 20-rebound performance by Chesapeake’s junior center Sarah Rucker.

Rucker scored 19 points in the first half as the Lady Panthers took a 25-22 lead at the break.

Rucker had six points in the third quarter when Chesapeake held Fairland to eight points and pulled away to a 38-30 lead.

Brianna Davis had all of Fairland’s points in the third quarter.

Although Davis scored seven more points in the fourth quarter, teammate Shea Berry scored 12 points including 10 of 13 from the foul line to key the comeback.

Davis led Fairland (3-3, 2-0 OVC) with 21 points. Berry had 14 points and Molly Bumgardner pulled down 14 rebounds.

Chesapeake (1-5, 0-3) also got six rebounds each from Brittany Sowards and Rachel Harris.
