PORTSMOUTH — Alvin Carpenter loves his grandchildren and would never do anything to hurt them.

However, it isn’t beneath him to beat them in a game of “Go Fish” or basketball.

Coming off a lopsided loss to Western Pike, Carpenter’s Symmes Valley Vikings routed the Portsmouth Notre Dame Titans 80-40 Tuesday in a Southern Ohio Conference game.

“After last week, I didn’t care if we played my grandkids if it meant we’d get a win,” Carpenter said.

The Vikings were led by Michael Humphreys with 26 points and nine rebounds. Symmes Valley pulled down 48 rebounds as a team as Kyle Meadows and Chris Capper also had nine rebounds each.

“Our strength is inside and we wanted to make sure our big guys got enough touches. We dominated the boards,” Carpenter said.

Matt Owens added 15 points as the Vikings improved to 2-3 and 2-1 in the SOC.

Owens scored seven points in the first quarter as Symmes Valley took a 16-10 lead.

Humphreys exploded for 14 points in the second quarter and the Vikings built a 42-20 advanaged.

Meadows scored eight of his nine points in the third quarter as the Vikings built an insurmountable 62-31.
