When the St. Joseph Flyers got in foul trouble, they didn’t cry “foul.”

The just called on Ryan Staton and Clay Crum.

Leading scorers Alex Swarts and Michael Basedow got in early foul trouble, but Staton and Crum proved more than ample replacements as the Flyers beat the Portsmouth East Tartans 62-39 Friday.

“Swarts and Basedow got in foul trouble early and we had to change our defense. But Staton came in and did a heck of a job and Clay Crum did a nice job,” Flyers coach Kevin Hacker said.

Basedow still managed to lead the Flyers (6-1) with 15 points. Cory Lewis scored 13 and Staton had 12 points, 10 rebounds and two seals.

Basedow and Lewis scored five points each in the first quarter as St. Joseph took a 17-10 lead.

Jeremy Addis and Staton got four points each in the second quarter as the Flyers open up a 31-15 halftime lead.

“We didn’t play well. We got in foul trouble and got out of rhythm. We lost our intensity and didn’t pick it up again until the third quarter,” Hacker said.

East outscored the Flyers 9-8 in the third quarter, but Alex Brown came off the bench to score seven points and Basedow had five more points as St. Joseph outscored East 23-15 to win going away.
