CHESAPEAKE — Everything went as planned.

Things worked out just as Chesapeake Panthers wrestling coach Phil Davis envisioned when he set up Saturday’s Panther Invitational.

Although Chesapeake did not win the tournament, the Panthers had four champions and two other wrestlers finish second.

“Our guys wrestled well,” Chesapeake coach Phil Davis said. “We set the tournament up to reward team performance and individual efforts.”

Brad Eldred, 25-3 on the season, led the Panthers as he won the 189-pound division.

“Eldred has gone up against some really good kids this year,” Davis said.

Brad Wiley won the 275-pound class, his first-ever tournament championship.

Erik McWhorter was first in the 215 class and Thomas Lewis claimed first place in the 119-pound division.

“I was happy with the tournament and the turnout,” Davis said.

The Fairland Dragons had two champions as Chuck Wentz took first place in the 103 weight class and Michael Evans was the 140-pound champion.

Finishing second for Chesapeake was Tim Wentz in the 171 class and Josh Hughes at 215 wrestling for the Panthers “B” team.

Chad Kilgore of Fairland was a runner-up in the 275 division.

The WSAZ-TV 3 Wrestling Invitational will be next Friday and Saturday at the Huntington (W.Va.) Memorial Field House.
