PEEBLES — Maybe they just needed to switch to a Diehard battery.

The Coal Grove Hornets didn’t need a jump start this time as they got off to a good start and went on to beat the Peebles Indians 50-38.

The Hornets have struggled in the first half of several games this season including last Tuesday in a loss to Rock Hill, but Friday the Hornets started well and finish strong.

“We were able to stave off an early bad start. We got some confidence early. Every time we got a four-, six- or 10-point lead they would come back,” Hornets coach Mike Waller said. “But to our kids’ credit, they kept answering the challenge.”

Adam Bare led the Hornets with 20 points and 11 rebounds. Evan Melvin and Randy Wise scored 11 points each for the Hornets (4-10).

“Adam Bare has really played well the last few games. He’s stepped up and did some good things for us,” Waller said.

Bare scored four points in the first quarter as Coal Grove went ahead 12-9.

In the second quarter, Bare scored seven points and the lead was 23-19 at the half.

Bare and Peebles’ Brade Wallace scored seven points each in the third quarter as Peebles closed the gap to 36-34.

But Evan Melvin and Wise combine for 10 points and Matt Melvin got all four of his points in the fourth quarter as Coal Grove held Pebbles to four points and pulled away to the win.

“That was our first road win, so that’s something for us to build on,” Waller said.

Bare got four in the first, seven second, seven in the third, Wise in the fourth, Evan Melvin 5 in fourth. Matt Melvin all four of his point in the fourth quarter.

“(Matt Melvin) only scored four points, but they were big,” Waller said.

Coal Grove held a six-point lead with four minutes to play, but the Vikings pulled together to run a spread offense and

helped run out the clock.

“We just took the air out of it, and when they came after us we would slip the ball inside and get a layup,” Waller said.
