NEW BOSTON — Who planned the Hoop Shoot contest?

The contest wasn’t planned correctly because only the New Boston Tigers got to shoot. The Tigers made 29 of 44 foul shots for the game as they beat the St. Joseph Flyes 72-65 Saturday night.

The Flyers were whistled for 34 fouls and had five players foul out.

“You could see the air come out of us when we started to foul out,” Flyers coach Kevin Hacker said.

St. Joseph (7-5) was led by Michael Basedow who had 19 points, nine rebounds and three steals. Cory Lewis scored 11 points and had five rebounds. Alex Swarts had five rebounds and eight points.

Justin Bowling and Kris Lawson scored 16 points each for New Boston (2-10). Rocky Dunkin and Kevin Salisbury had 13 points each and Tony Musick 12.

Swarts scored six points as the Flyers took a 12-11 lead. Musick also had six for the Tigers.

Dunkin had nine points in the second quarter as New Boston took a 30-29 halftime lead. Basedow scored seven and Jeremy Addis four as the Flyers stayed close.

Lewis got nine of his points in the third quarter and Ryan Staton had four points to help St. Joseph rally for a 46-40 lead.

The Flyers led midway through the fourth quarter when the fouls began to mount. New Boston was 15 of 24 from the foul line in the quarter with Lawson making 7 of 13.

Basedow scored 10 points and Ryan Waginger hit a pair of 3-pointers to keep St. Joseph in the game.

“The kids off the bench played well,” Hacker said. “Ryan Waginger hit some big shots. Chad Harvey hit some free throws and made some good plays and ran the offense, and Jerrod Labor had a rebound and steal.”
