Panthers knock off stubborn Winfield

WINFIELD, W.Va. — Call AEP. There seems to be a need for some additional energy.

The lack of energy late in the game almost proved costly as the Chesapeake Panthers held off the Winfield Generals 75-67 Tuesday in a non-league game.

The Panthers (11-1) led by as many as 19 points before Winfield staged a fourth quarter comeback that fell short.

“We didn’t play with any energy and they did, for whatever reason,” Chesapeake coach Norm Persin said.

“We played well in spurts, but we got complacent in the fourth quarter and stopped attacking the basket. But the good thing is we won.”

P.J. Rase led the Panthers (11-1) with 20 points including

10 of 10 from the foul line.

Justin Porter scored 14, Tyler Shoemaker had 13, and Zach Morrison and Brent Randbottom 11 each.

“Morrison is doing better,” Persin said. “HE gives us a bigger body and he can score. He’s going to get more minutes as we go along.”

Tyler Hamilton scored 26 points to lead Winfield (9-2). Jordan Kessler scored 1 points and Lamar Clark added 11.

Rase scored six points in the first quarter as the Panthers built a 24-14 lead.

Porter got eight points in the second quarter as Chesapeake pulled away to a 42-28 lead.

The Panthers were up 60-44 heading into the fourth quarter.

Hamilton scored 10 points and Rase was 8 of 8 from the foul line in the fourth quarter to seal the win.

Hamilton got seven points in the second quarter 10 in the fourth.

Kessler got nine in the fourth.
