— First, the Coal Grove Lady Hornets lost their leader. Then they lost the game. And finally, they lost their share of the Ohio Valley Conference lead.

The Lady Hornets lost leading scorer Chelsea Markins with a sprained ankle at the end of the first half while leading by 17 points.

Lead by the scoring of Brianna Davis, Fairland stormed back in the second half to beat Coal Grove 62-57 and knock the Lady Hornets a game behind South Point in the OVC race.

“Chelsea holds us together. If she’s still in the game, I think we can still win the game,” Coal Grove coach Nick Miller said.

“But we had our chances. We missed some foul shots and some wide-open shots under the basket in the fourth quarter.”

Jordyn Cox and Markins scored five points each in the first quarter as Coal Grove took an 18-9 lead and it was 32-19 at the half.

Davis scored 14 points in the third quarter as Fairland outscored Coal Grove 24-12 and sliced the Hornets lead to 44-43. Samantha Hall had eight points for Coal Grove in the quarter.

While Fairland was 19 of 24 from the foul line in the second half, Coal Grove could only convert 3 of 11 free throws in the fourth quarter.

Davis finished with a game-high 30 points including 11 of 11 from the foul line. Molly Bumgardner added 11 points.

Hall led Coal Grove with 21 points before fouling out. Cox had 10 points.
