PROCTOVILLE — It was a numbers game for the Fairland Dragons.

By using lots of players, the Dragons caused a large number of turnovers and scored plenty of points in a 65-44 win over the Coal Grove Hornets Tuesday in an Ohio Valley Conference game.

“Our goal going in was to run a lot of bodies at them and put a lot of pressure on them,” Fairland coach Chad Belville said. “We knew they weren’t real deep so we wanted to wear them down.”

Fairland’s pressure forced the

Hornets into 22 turnovers, many leading to points for the Dragons.

“We had some turnovers that they turned into baskets. And we didn’t shoot the ball well, either,” Hornets coach Mike Waller said.

Coal Grove (3-8, 0-4 OVC) was just 10 of 38 from the field for 26 percent.

Fairland (7-4, 3-1 OVC) was led by Michael Lamb with 12 points and seven rebounds. Cole Hatfield had 11 points and five assists. Dustin Bumgardner grabbed seven rebounds.

Evan Melvin scored 15 points and Randy Wise 10 to lead the Hornets. Adam Bare had seven rebounds.

Josh Johnson, Adam Fuller and Lamb had four points each and Hatfield hit a 3-pointer as Fairland went ahead 16-9 in the first quarter.

Evan Melvin and Matt Melvin had eight of Coal Grove’s nine points. The Hornets were guilty of six turnovers in the first quarter.

Fairland’s Chris Barnett scored all five of his points in one stretch

that extended the lead from nine points to 32-19 at the half.

Lamb scored seven of his points in the third quarter as the lead grew to 47-30.

A 3-pointer by Hatfield early in the fourth quarter helped ignite an eight-point spurt as Fairland continued to pad its lead.

“Our game all year has been to play a lot of people and make it hard to key on one person. We like to share it and we did when you see we have 10 players in the scoring column,” Belville said.
