Coach Tim Thomas was looking for a good effort. What he got was a surprise win.

Using eight first place winners and some key depth, the Ironton Lady Fighting Tigers won their own track invitational Thursday.

“I was surprised with our depth. We picked up some fourth and fifth place wins that I didn’t expect,” Thomas said. “But I knew we had some strong individuals. We got a lot of first place wins and we finished the meet in a flourish.”

Ironton trailed by 10 points with four events to go, then stormed back to rack up a 130 points and finished ahead of runner-up Rock Hill with 117 points. Coal Grove was third with 105 followed by South Point with 101, Chesapeake 52 and Fairland 9.

Mandi Boykin led Ironton as she won the 100 and 200 meter dashes and ran a leg on the winning 4×100 meter relay along with Cinnamon Fletcher, Kayla Wileman and Katie Washburn.

Ciara Taylor was an easy winner in the 400 meter dash and anchored the winning 4×400 relay team.

Rachel Walker won the discus by more than 10 feet and joined Taylor, Wileman and Valerie Sweeney on the 4×400 relay team. Sweeney had an individual win as she claimed the 800 meter run by 10 seconds. Krista Markel won the pole vault for Ironton’s other individual win.

Chesapeake will host the Lions Club Invitational next Friday.
