Defense key for Redwomen

The Rock Hill Redwomen are doing it with defense.

The Redwomen didn’t make an error as they beat the Ironton Lady Fighting Tigers 7-2 Thursday.

Ironton was guilty of five errors that helped fuel Rock Hill’s scoring.

“We played good defense and they’re hitting the ball. I can’t ask for anything else,” Rock Hill coach Mary Harper said.

Bobbi Harper struck out 12 and walked one to get the win.

Rock Hill took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Kayla Kelly reached on an error, Megan Long singled and an outfield error on the play allowed the run to score.

The lead went to 2-0 in the third.

Katrina Settle singled, moved up on a wild pitch and came home on a hit by Jazel DeAutremont.

Ironton tied the game with two runs in the fourth inning.

Kelsey Bronson singled and Edi Taylor doubled for a run. Tausha Collins grounded out as Taylor scored.

But Rock Hill scored four times in the sixth inning to take the lead for good.

Chaffins singled and went to second base on an error. She stole third base and came home when Kelly was safe on a throwing error.

Megan Long singled, moved up on a ground out and Shelli Harper singled home two runs.

Shelli Harper stole second and scored on a hit by Settle.

The Redwomen got an insurance run in the seventh inning on a hit by Kelly and a triple by Brooke Long.

Rock Hill, 10-5, hosts South Point Friday in an Ohio Valley Conference game.
