ROME — Numbers seemed to be the overriding theme.

Extra numbers were the difference as Wheelersburg won the Fairland Invitational boys track meet Friday despite strong numbers by individuals of other teams.

“Wheelersburg showed some tremendous depth,” Fairland coach Jon Buchanan said. “They didn’t win a lot of individual events, but all they’re relays were strong and they placed two of the top eight in most events.”

Chesapeake’s Jeffrey Thornburg won the 110 high hurdles at 15.88 seconds and the 400 low hurdles with a 42.8 time. He was third in the long jump (18-9).

The Panthers Brent Ransbottom remained unbeaten in the high jump as he cleared 6-6.

“South Webster did very well in the distance events and Chesapeake has some great individuals in Jeff Thornburg, Brent Ransbottom and Kenny Morgan. Other than a little rain, the meet went very well,” Buchanan said.

The shot put was tightly contested with the top three distances more than 50 feet. Ironton’s John Pemberton had a personal best of 51-1 to place third.

After Wheelersburg with 130 points, South Webster was second overall with 114 followed by Chesapeake with 112 and Fairland had 65 to place fourth in the 12-team field.

Ironton’s Marc Carter won the 400 meter dash with a swift time of 51.2.

Fairland’s Chuck Wentz won the 800 meter run and was third in the 1600.

Most area teams will compete in the Charleston Gazette Relays next weekend.
