There’s not truth to the rumor the Ironton Fighting Tigers were the inspiration for the book, “The Giver.”

Ironton spent Tuesday giving away runs as the Fighting Tigers committed seven errors that led to five unearned runs in an 8-7 loss in eight innings to the Jackson Ironmen.

“We made too many mistakes to overcome,” Ironton coach Mark Lewis said. “We came out flat, we dug ourselves a hole and had to fight back the whole game.

“You can’t keep making those kinds of mistakes and expect to win.”

Ironton had tied the game in the seventh inning and had a chance to win the game.

Jay Rudmann doubled to start the seventh and Greg Kettel walked. A bad pickoff throw at second base moved the runners up and Chris Rakes grounded out as a run scored.

Troy Allen squeezed home a run, and Jackson intentionally walked Dennis Gagai and Michael Preston to set up a force play. But a strike out and pop out ended the rally.

Jackson (11-4) scored the winning run in the eighth inning due to Ironton’s defensive mistakes.

Justin Ervin reached on an error to start the inning. After Seth Osborne hit into a force lay, Marcus Boggs sacrificed the runner for the second out.

But Jesse Adams’ fly ball was misplayed for an error allowing the run to score.

The Ironmen scored four runs in the first inning thanks to three Ironton errors, two infield rollers for hits, a bloop single an a base hit by Erwin.

The lead went to 7-0 in the fourth inning.

Erwin singled, an infield error, an outfield error and a double by Coyan.

Ironton cut the deficit to 7-2 in the fourth inning as Rakes singled and Gagai and Preston.

The Fighting Tigers got within 7-5 in the sixth inning.

Rakes singled, stole second base and went to third on a hit by Troy Allen who went to second base on the throw to home plate. On the relay throw to get Allen advancing, Rakes scored.

Gagai doubled for a run andscored on a base hit by Chad Miller.

Gagai was 2-3 with two runs batted in and Rakes was 2-5.

Ironton, 5-5, plays at Portsmouth West Thursday.
