OAK HILL — The St. Joseph Flyers want to move forward. They took step number one Monday.

The Flyers began their push toward the postseason with a 10-4 win over the Oak Hill Oaks.

“We hit the ball well tonight and played pretty good defense. We want to progress as the week goes on to get ready for the tournament,” Flyers coach Greg Bryant said.

Ryan Waginger struck out seven, walked one and allowed 11 hits to get the win.

“Ryan pitched well. He gave up more hits than we wanted, but we played the good defense behind him,” Bryant said.

St. Joseph (10-3), banged out 14 hits as every starter had at least one hit for the Flyers.

Alex Swarts led the Flyers as he went 2-for-4 with a double and a home run. Michael Basedow and Caleb Blackburn were 2-3 while Jerrod laber and Waginger went 2-4.

The Flyers struck early with four runs in the first inning.

Ryan Schwab and Jeremy Addis singled and Waginger reached on a fielder’s choice. Swarts doubled to drive in two.

Laber singled Swarts to third and stole second. Blackburn and Gagai walked to forced in a run and Basedow had a run-scoring single.

After Oak Hill got a run in the third inning, the Flyers scored four more in the fourth inning.

Reid Smith singled, Addis was safe on an error and Waginger singled for a run. Waginger stole second base and Laber had a two-run double.

Blackburn capped the rally with an RBI single.

The Oaks got two runs back in the fifth inning only to see the Flyers score twice in the sixth when Waginger singled and Swarts clubbed a two-run homer.

St. Joseph plays at Raceland, Ky., at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday and hosts Coal Grove Wednesday.
