Lady Pointers roll to win

PORTSMOUTH — Dump the slump.

After losing four of their last five games, the South Point Lady Pointers erupted for 20 hits and beat the Portsmouth Lady Trojans 11-1 in five innings Monday.

“Everything came together for us offensively and defensively,” Lady Pointers coach Marty Patrick said.

Ericka Leighty singled and stole second base to start the game and scored on a hit by Summer Malone. Alison Queen tripled for the RBI and Whitney Woody followed with a run-scoring single.

South Point kept the offense going with a run in the second and four in the third inning to lead 8-0.

Portsmouth got its only run in the bottom of the third inning, but South Point put the game away with three runs in the fifth inning.

Lauren Moore had a leadoff single. Leighty singled and then Queen and Woody had back-to-back doubles to create the five-inning mercy rule win.

Woody got the win as she went the first three innings. Queen struck out six in two innings of work.

South Point, 12-6, plays at Huntington (W.Va.) St. Joseph Tuesday. Portsmouth falls to 5-12.
