Lady Pointers slow Lady Hornets scoring

SOUTH POINT — In order to beat the Coal Grove Lady Hornets, coach Dave Adams figured the South Point Lady Pointers had to eliminate two parts of the three-headed scoring monster.

Although Chelsea Markins scored a game-high 29 points, the Lady Pointers defense held Samantha Hall to eight points and Jordyn Cox to nine as South Point beat Coal Grove 61-56 Thursday in a key Ohio Valley Conference game.

“We knew Markins would get her points. Defensively we wanted to limit Cox and Hall. The last time we played, all three of them hurt us,” Adams said.

With the win, South Point is 6-1 in the OVC and Coal Grove 7-1 in the league.

South Point wasn’t without its offense. Amy Frasure scored a career-high 25 points. Jessica Craft added 15 points.

“Frasure had shots and she just hit them,” Lady Hornets coach Nick Miller said. “She was a big difference in the game.

“I think the real difference was free throws. We just didn’t hit them and they did.”

Coal Grove (12-3) was just 14 of 26 from the line while South Point was 19 of 25.

South Point jumped out to an 18-9 lead only to have Markins hit a pair of 3-pointers and get the Lady Hornets even at 18-18 to end the quarter.

South Point pulled away to a 37-29 halftime lead and it was 49-41 at the end of the third quarter when Frasure and Craft hit 3-pointers to close out the quarter. Markins scored 10 points in the quarter for the Lady Hornets.

In the fourth quarter, South Point lead by three points with 20 seconds left which forced Coal Grove to foul.

Frasure, who scored 10 points in the quarter, was intentionally fouled and hit both shots to push the lead to five. Coal Grove failed to convert on its next possession and time expired.

“Amy had a good night. She’s had some good games, but not a big game like this,” Adams said.

“It was a great atmosphere. We had a big crowd and we really appreciate the support. It helped us.”

Markins scored 18 of her points in the second half.

“Chelsea play really well. She didn’t want to lose. And Brittany Harrison played well,” Miller said.

Coal Grove hosts New Boston at 6 p.m. Saturday.
