Redwomen clinch 2nd place

CHESAPEAKE - They were second, and they tried harder.

The Rock Hill Redwomen closed out Ohio Valley Conference softball play with a 4-2 win over the Chesapeake Lady Panthers Thursday to clinch at least a share of second place.

“We were second in the league and we lost some close games that we could have won. The girls have had a great year,” Redwomen coach Mary Harper said.

Rock Hill is 14-5 on the second and finished 7-3 in the league.

The Redwomen got a run in the second inning to lead 1-0.

Brooke Long reached on a fielder’s choice, Megan Long singled and Samantha Massie grounded out as Brooke Long scored.

Rock Hill came back with two runs run in the top of the third.

Candice Chaffin and Kayla Kelley singled and scored when Jazel DeAutremont tripled.

Chesapeake cut the lead to 3-1 in the bottom of the inning.

Nikki Lindsey singled,

moved up on a wild pitch and scored on a ground out by Kati McCallister.

Rock Hill got a run in the top of the fifth when Bobbi Harper singled, moved up on a wild pitch, took third on a ground out and came home on DeAutremont’s double.

The Lady Panthers scored again in the bottom of the inning.

Lindsey singled, stole second and McCallister had an RBI single.

The Redwomen will host Greenup County, Ky., next Friday.
