COAL GROVE — Could this be a preview of things to come?

With the Ohio Valley Conference meet less than a month away, the South Point Pointers and Chesapeake didn’t establish a favorite as the two teams tied for the boys championship of the Coal Grove Giovanni’s Pizza Invitational track meet Thursday.

Both teams had 116 points with Fairland in third place with 99.5 points. Coal Grove was fourth with 43, Rock Hill had 37.5 and Ironton 36 in the 12-team field.

The girls meet produced no OVC favorite as well with two non-OVC schools taking the top two places.

Fairview (Ky.) won the girls meet with128.5 points and the Ironton Lady Fighting Tigers were next with 95 points.

Next came OVC teams Rock Hill with 75, Coal Grove 65 and South Point 54.

One boys meet record fell as Chesapeake’s Brent Ransbottom cleared 6-foot-8 in the high jump. Ransbottom broke the Chesapeake Lions Club meet record last week.

Chesapeake’s Jeffrey Thornburg won meet high point honors as he won the long jump and both hurdles.

Ironton’s Mandi Boykin broke a meet record for the second straight week, too. After setting the 100 meter record at 12.2 last week at Chesapeake, Boykin set a new 200 meters record with a 25.7 clocking.

Fairview’s Mandy Musick, who set a meet record in the pole vault at 8-3 and the 800 meter run with a 2:29 time, was the girls’ high point winner.
