CHESAPEAKE — Florida orange growers aren’t the only ones who know how to squeeze.
Justin Smith put down a squeeze bunt in the fifth inning that drove in the winning run as the South Point Pointers got past the Chesapeake Panthers 3-2 Monday in a key Ohio Valley Conference game.
“We got a squeeze down. We executed that well. We’ve emphasized that this year. We’re more about fundamental baseball this year,” Pointers coach Dave Adams said.
Chesapeake coach Joe Waugh said his team wasted a solid pitching performance by Cody Methax who struck out 10, did not walk a batter and gave up five hits.
“Cody pitched well and we had chances. It was frustrating,” Waugh said.
Chesapeake took a 2-0 lead in the third inning.
P.J. Rase was safe on an error, Cory Methax singled and Cody Methax tripled them home.
South Point cut the deficit to 2-1 in the fourth inning on a double by Trent Moore and Chase McWhorter reached on an error.
The winning runs scored in the fifth inning.
Chris Brown singled, stole second base and Anthony Ross struck out only to have the strike dropped and the ball thrown into right field, scoring Brown.
Smith then put down a squeeze bunt that scored Ross with the go-ahead run.
“We got some people on base and they scored. We needed to win to keep pace,” Adams said. “We threw two guys out at home. That was huge.”
South Point is 6-3 and 2-1 in the OVC. Chesapeake slips to 5-1 and 3-1 in the OVC.
The Panthers play at Gallipolis Tuesday.
