Carter, Boykin lead state qualifiers

BYESVILLE — And they’re off and running…

Right to the state meet.

Ironton junior sprinter Mandi Boykin and sophomore middle distance runner Marc Carter used record-setting performances to run their way to the Division II state track meet.

Boykin, making her third trip to the state meet in as many years, set a stadium record in the 10—meter dash with a 12.35 time to win the event. Her 25.48 clocking in the 200 meters was also a stadium record and gave her a second first-place finish at the regional meet held Saturday at Meadowbrook High School.

Carter set a stadium and new school record with a 1:55.86 time in the 800-meter run as he took first place, three seconds ahead of Warren’s Tyler Cantley.

Ironton junior John Pemberton finished second with a heave of 52-9.5 and earned a ticket to the state meet. Freshman high jumper Lukas Morris cleared 6-1 and finished sixth.

The South Point Pointers 4×400 relay team of Josh Jones, Aaron Patterson, David Absher and Norris placed third and earned a berth in the state meet with their best time of the season at 3:30.57.

Senior Benji Smith qualified in the 110-meter hurdles as he ran a 15.88 to place fourth. Freshman Quay Logan tied for eighth in the high jump at 6-foot.

Rock Hill senior sprinter Jason Massie placed eighth in the 100-meter dash at 11.65 seconds. Fairland junior Chuckie Wentz was seventh in the 1600-meter run (4:40.3).

The top four finishers in each event qualify for the state meet to be held Friday and Saturday at Jesse Owens Stadium on the campus the Ohio State University.

South Point’s Ericka Leighty cleared 5-2 to take third place in the high jump on Thursday and advance to the state meet.

Admission to the state meet is $8 but there will be no charge for parking.
