PEDRO — This time, Chesapeake Panthers coach Phil Davis did what his players wanted instead of the other way around.

Listening to their pleas to perform in multiple events, the Panthers won the Division III Southeast district track meet Friday.

“We’re pretty happy,” Panthers coach Phil Davis said. “I asked the kids if they wanted to run their usual stuff and how much they wanted to run overall.

“The kids wanted to do it and take a shot at (winning the meet). We got a great effort, really. I thought our people in the final events on Tuesday did excellent.”

Chesapeake had 144 points to runner-up South Webster’s 138 total.

Lucasville Valley was third with 84, Federal Hocking had 76 and the Coal Grove Hornets were fifth with 67 points in the 13-team field.

One of the highlights of the meet was the final race as the 4×400 relay team of Kenny Morgan, Adam Slone, Caleb McComas and Jeffrey Thornburg ran its best time of the year with a 3:31.7 clocking to win the event.

“We were up by four points going into the 3200 and we didn’t have anyone in that event. If they went 1-2 in the 3200, we couldn’t beat them and they went 2, 5,” Davis said.

“We didn’t have to win the 4×400, but the kids wanted it and everyone ran their best leg of the year.”

The top four finishers in each event qualify for the regional meet to be held next Wednesday and Friday at Pickerington North High School.

Chesapeake’s Brent Ransbottom won the high jump at 6-8. Aaron Ross was second in the pole vault at 12-0 and Aaron Allen fourth at 11-6.
