“Each year, the club has a different group to come as entertainment for the luncheon. This year, the Open Door Bell Choir will be performing,” said club president Becky Depriest.

There will be a raffle to win a Longaberger basket, $100 gift and a $50 gift. Participants do not need to be present to win these items. The raffle tickets and luncheon tickets can be purchased from any club member. Door prizes will also be given away.

The Child Welfare Club members pride themselves on supporting and sponsoring various projects throughout the year.

The club’s goal is to improve the quality of life for children in the community. Some of the projects sponsored include the Scholastic Achievement Awards (Eddy Awards) to the top sixth-grade students in the elementary schools.

The group also sponsors a presentation for the freshmen students who have maintained a “B” average or better in all subjects.

The club provides financial support to the Academy of Excellence, the Grads Program, Gear Up, Endowment to the Ohio University Southern Campus.

It also supports the Ironton City Mission, Open Door School, Domestic Violence Shelter, Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM), and students who travel for educational purposes, such as Christmas with Dignity, Tools for School and Grab a Ride.

As a special project this year, the club helped a family with children from the Katrina disaster and the Give-A-Program at St. Paul Lutheran Church.

The officers for this year are president Becky Depriest, vice president Mary Janet Medinger, treasurer Claris DuFore, recording secretary Barbara Waginger, corresponding secretary Jean Wiseman, press reporter Ruth Stephenson and parliamentarian Janice Heaberlin.
